Road trip checklist

Before you head out

• Tires: check cold pressure using the door label, visible condition, and the spare if equipped. Know where the factory tire kit is.
• Oil and fluids: check levels as your manual describes. Check coolant only with a cold engine; never open a hot cooling-system cap.
• Service: check your owner's manual for exact intervals. If service is due, have a qualified mechanic inspect it before departure.
• Brakes and battery: for new noises, changes in braking, slow starts, or warning lights, have a qualified mechanic inspect it before the trip.
• Visibility: check headlights, brake lights, turn signals, wiper performance, and washer fluid. For needed repairs or replacements, have a qualified mechanic inspect it.
• Supplies: pack water, snacks, a flashlight, a phone charger, a first-aid kit, and weather-appropriate supplies.
• Trip details: bring your license, registration, insurance information, and roadside assistance number. Check the route and weather, and plan rest stops.
• On the road: for overheating, a flashing engine light, grinding brakes, or severe shaking, pull over safely and stop driving. Arrange roadside assistance.
